POLAR VORTEX SENIOR LIVING CASE STUDY
Location: Michigan City, IN
Date: Jan. 2, 2018
Facility Size: 93,000 Square Feet
Loss Type: Sprinkler Break
On the morning of January 2, 2018, SRM received notice that a Senior Living Center in Michigan City, IN had sustained water damage due to a sprinkler system eruption. During that time, the entire Midwest was experiencing extremely low temperatures, aptly named the Polar Vortex. Pipe breaks, froze lines, and sprinkler failures were occurring across the region
SRM received the loss notice at approximately 9:50 AM and responded with a Project Manager on site by 11:27 AM. After accessing the damage, SRM determined that 20 rooms and the main hallway were affected. SRM then customized a recovery plan tailored to this specific loss so that the Senior Living Center could operate at full capacity quickly.
By 1:20 PM, SRM had a team of either Technicians and Project Coordinators on site placing 100 pieces of mitigation equipment and a 600 watt generator. The generator was placed at the scene to provide proper supplemental power to the equipment in order to prevent power disruption in the facility. Before completing the job on January 5, 2018, SRM was able to place the equipment, perform demolition to non-salvageable areas, execute anti-microbial treatment and carpet cleaning, provide back-up power and move or remove content for a swift turn around. SRM was able to get the Senior Living Center back to full operation in less than 3 days during on of the worst cold snaps on record.
